About Craig A Lawson

Craig Lawson, President and CEO of CALCBS

Craig A Lawson, President and CEO of CALCBS, has been in the construction, development, consultation and energy efficiency fields since 1976.  His years of experience, coupled with professional certifications make him an expert in home performance/energy efficiency, building, remodeling, additions, green building, development and construction consultation fields. Craig started off his building career after college in 1976 in Sonoma County.  He cut his teeth specializing in foundations, framing and interior finishes on homes in the west county hillsides and in Bodega Harbor development.  His skill set and quest to be an entrepreneur led Craig to get his own contractor’s license in 1979, where he quickly became known as one of the best framers in the North Bay.  Craig’s skill set was quickly recognized and in 1981 Joe Murphy, president of California Homes hired Craig to join California Homes as Construction Manager and ultimately, Vice President of Construction and Operations.  Craig worked with California Homes from in those capacities until 1988 and was retained as a Consultant thru 1992.  In his tenure with California Homes, he helped build that company into one or the largest homebuilding and development companies in the North Bay, constructing over 2,500 homes.  In 1989, Craig began building on his own again.  His expertise in the entitlement, development, building and consultation field yielded multiple subdivision developments, consultation and construction management work-out expertise for local lending institutions, contracts for the construction of high end custom homes, and entitlement processing for other entities.  This ultimately culminated with the partnering of longtime Associate and Friend, Dick Dowd, in the creation of Pinnacle Homes.  Craig served as the President from the beginning of the company, until 2011. Pinnacle Homes was responsible for the entitlement, development and construction of over 22 major projects.  In addition, they created Custom Homes, Remodeling and Additions,  Home Performance/Energy Efficiency and Construction Management divisions within Pinnacle Homes. In 2007 when many municipalities began to look at introduction mandatory Green Building ordinances, they took the proactive approach to see how their product stacked up against the impending requirements, so they could adjust where necessary, including providing appropriate training for the their staff.  Energy Consultants where hired to review existing communities they had under construction.  When the consultant finished the analysis of their product, and gave the “Green Point ratings” for those communities, it was obvious they had chosen a path for developing the best quality, energy efficient homes in the North Bay.  The consultants response was “you not only qualify, you are overqualified under the most strict “Green Point rating” requirement in the County by a wide margin.  This realization spurned Craig’s quest to become not only the best rating wise, but to receive training and certification in Green and Energy Efficiency related fields.  Craig first received his Certified Green Building Professional accreditation with Build if Green (both basic and advanced) in 2008.  He became a Certified Building Analyst with the Building Performance Institute in 2009.  He has since re-certifed as a Building Analyst and taken and passed the Building Envelope Professional certification exam.  In addition he completed the HERS Building Performance Contractors training which gives him a HERS “I” (compliance rater) and HERS”II” (whole house energy rater) certification. He has also participated in training for the following areas:

Auditing Electricity Use in Homes

Craig’s expertise in the Home Performance/Energy Upgrade field was recognized during his tenure with Pinnacle Homes.  As a strict requirement in the Energy Upgrade field, BPI Certified Building Analysts have to go thru rigorous 3rd party Quality Insurance reviews.  These reviews can be random, and are often done by the top instructors in the field.  After completing a 3rd party Q.A., Craig was approached by the Verifier and asked if he would be a Verifier, Mentor and Proctor. Craig has always been active in industry and civic matters.  He is the former President of the Building Industry Association and served on its North Bay and Regional Boards for over 15 years.  He’s a former Board member for the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce and has been active in their Advocacy Council, was Vice Chair of the Housing Committee, on the Advocacy Council Executive Committee and a member of the Chambers Political Action Committee.  Craig is member and former Steering Committee member for the North Bay Chapter of Efficiency First. Craig is a founding member and former chair for The Construction Coalition, a joint venture between the North Coast Builders Exchange and the Building Industry Association advocating for industry related issues.  Craig is on the North Coast Builders Exchange Board of Directors and member of their Green Building Comittee.  Craig has been active in recreation and sports his entire career.  He coached girls fast pitch travel ball teams and Montgomery High School Varsity softball for over 14 years.  Craig is a past Recreation and Parks Commissionaire with the City of Sebastopol and is presently the Chairman of the Board for the Santa Rosa Board of Community Services, which has oversight for Recreation and Parks, Art in Public Places, Gang Intervention afterschool programs and many other Community Service functions.
